Maggie started cheering in 2nd grade and did all star (competitive) cheerleading all the way until her junior year, when she made Riverview Varsity as a Junior. She did not play JV at all. She is a main base, which is the person who holds up the flyers. She has been cheering for 10 years. She said her favorite memory was being with all the girls during Friday Night Lights. She specifically said her favorite individual memory was Riverview's first home game this season against Naples where there were a torrential downpour and everyone's shoes got wet. She mentioned it was neon night, so it was really cool seeing everyone in the rain. She is exceptional at balancing cheer and school, maintaining a 4.15 weighted GPA with all honors and AP classes. She obviously cheers during the week and also has a job. She keeps a weekly schedule of planning her week and said her coach does a good job highlighting the practice plan each week.

After High School, she wants to go to a state public university to study pre-med and then go into nursing for a master's degree. She has great plans! She has had to go through some adversity as well through RHS cheer. She told me she got cut from the freshmen year cheer team, but that didn’t stop her. She continued to refine her skills and get better, which allowed her to make the team her junior year at varsity. She said that in practice, you have to continue to practice like you’re the backup because you can’t be complacent. Her coach said that you have to act like if you feel like you’re doing good, do better. You have to continue to work hard and keep your spot on the varsity team. Finally, she told me her advice to the younger girls who want to cheer is to keep working hard and have fun, because that is what keeps you mentally strong and allows to make lifelong friendships throughout your life. Cheer makes great bonds, as you’re always keeping yourself accountable, while making lifelong memories in the process.
