On a Venice High football roster loaded with talent, Cole Wetherington has carved out his role through effort, toughness and consistency. Wetherington has become a dependable presence for the Indians, embracing the gritty work that allows Venice’s defense to thrive. Whether fighting through blocks, chasing plays from the backside or handling the details that don’t always earn headlines, Cole plays with a motor that rarely shuts off.
Venice defensive coordinator Larry Shannon "He’s one of those guys who just keeps coming, Cole doesn’t take plays off. He does his job and he does it the right way." During the regional semi final game, Wetherington showed off his ball skills with a 35 yard interception returned for a touchdown. Wetherington finished the season with 81 tackles, 8 tfl’s and 6 sacks.
Cole doesn’t just star on the football field, he also takes honors level classes and carries a 3.7 weighted GPA. Between his school work, practice and watching plenty of film, Wetherington knows that being prepared and watching plenty of film on his opponents, gives him the best opportunity against very good competition. "I came to Venice because I wanted to play with and against the best players in the state of Florida. We won a championship and the goal is to go back to back. It has been very good for me to play with a guy as talented as Ashari Charles. He is faster than me, so I have to work harder to get to the QB at the same time or close to it and because of that, I am a much better player then when I got here."
