In 1986, the State of Florida did not have separate classes for golf. To win a championship, you literally had to beat everyone else in the entire state of Florida. And that is exactly what Venice High’s Sheryl Maize accomplished. She was able to etch her name into the history books, capturing the Florida state championship and capping off a season defined by precision, poise, and power.
Maize delivered a masterclass performance at the state tournament, showcasing consistency off the tee and a smooth short game that separated her from the field. Her final round was a blend of calm focus and competitive fire — exactly what’s made her one of the premier golfers in the state.
Earlier this year, Venice High School honored Maize by inducting her in their first ever Hall of Fame class. Sheryl chose to play her college golf for the University of Miami and was named captain of her team. Her success story didn’t end there, Maize went on to play as a professional golfer on the futures tour, before injuries sidelined her career.
Always the competitor, Maize began teaching golf and was named head coach at the University of Memphis and Augsburg College. In 2019 Sheryl Maize was named the LGPA National Teacher of the year.
If you get the privilege of talking to Sheryl about golf, you will see exactly what propelled her to be the best at whatever she sets her mind to.
